Bird in the Hand Zine Shop

zine also 'zine (zn) n. 1. An inexpensively produced, self-published, underground publication

Hello again…

It’s been a big week already huh?  Earlier in the week I sent off about 30 parcels to recipients right around the world and in noticing the popularity slowly growing in the Northern hemisphere I’ve adjusted our shipping rates to be real accurate.  Our shipping rates are organised by weight and are the prices we are charged by AusPost.

Where in the world are you, Carmen Santiago?

An example of shipping prices?  250g in Australia costs either $3.00 or $5.70 depending on shape of the parcel; 250g to NZ is $7.20; 250g to the UK is $11.35; and 250g to the US is $10.00.  This all sounds pretty affordable actually!  All items in our zine shop are weighed for accuracy and to make sure you’re paying just the right amount.

If you’re anywhere else in the world, we can accommodate your order.  You just have to ask me via email zineshop@gmail.com

Here’s some Australia-specific stuff we’ve been doing:

We’ve also seen how popular those Free Shipping Fridays are… so let me remind you!  Shipping is free within Australia every single Friday til Christmas.  This is just another way we show you we love ya guts.  Ho ho ho.

Yes, we know, you don’t want to think about Christmas.  So… Shipping is free automatically in Australia if you spend $40 or more.

Soon our shop on King Street will be back open.  I’ve had a bit of difficulty in that I work a bunch and play this hectic sport called roller derby.  At this time of the year, things start to get extremely busy but with the helping hand of trusty volunteers, we’ll be back in the game.  Email me if you’re interested in shop sitting zineshop@gmail.com

Do you wanna see what the shop looks like at the moment?

And what’s going on in other places?

I bet you’ve been thinking… What’s going on in the Japanese zine world?  Well, I just got linked to this article about expat zinemakers who’ve been bringing the zine art form to Japan of late.  Have a read!

This also led me to the website of a Japanese zine distro called Wasabi Distro.  What could be more interesting than this?

E Chris Lynch of Microcosm Publishing linked me today to a Kickstarter project of Microcosm’s to pay for publishing of their latest book “How and Why: a do it yourself guide”.  I’ve long been looking for an appropriate project to get funded through one of these sites (in Australia there’s one called FundBreak..).  Basically, Microcosm need $5,000 to pay for the printing of this book and they’re getting donations and ‘backing’ to do this.  They’re up to $4,940 and there’s 11 hours to go.  The tricky bit is, if you don’t get the full $5,000 pledged you get NOTHING.  All the money goes back to the original donaters.  It looks like Microcosm won’t have any trouble though.  I’ve pledged $25 and 81 other people have given something.  If you wanna be the cool cat to get them over the line, I highly suggest donating! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/897079804/print-matte-resists-new-book-how-and-why

And yes, there’s lots of new stuff in those pictures and lots of new stuff to go up on the website.  Lets just relax for a minute and then we’ll get back to it!

<3 Susy

It’s that day of the week we long for, right? Well, this Friday free shipping returns.

Any order, any amount, anywhere in Australia, every Friday until 25 December 2010.

Smells Like Zines Distro is just in its beginning stages up in Queensland! Elouise Quinlivan is the bright spark behind it and she’s really keen for you to send her your zines. It’s really important to support new distros so that they stick around and become wealthy resources of sick zines for zine-readers everywhere.

She’s got a consignment form available for anyone who’s keen – email her on the address below (alternatively, drop me a line and I’ll fwd the form I’ve got zineshop[at]gmail.com)

Hello! Long time no speaky! There’s so much new stock to upload onto the online store including new things from Canberran zinesters, the venerable and all-round awesome Wollongongian Amanda Dale and amazing art zine duo of the Bounpraseuth family. But because there’s so much on with Bird in the Hand I need a little help with my other hobby. It’s roller derby and I rollerskate heaps of times a week for Newcastle Roller Derby League.

I joined NRDL back in October, 2009 (not long ago!) and since then we’ve grown so much. We’ve played at the Hordern Pavilion in front of a 2000-strong crowd, travelled to the inaugural nationals tournament in Adelaide, and have many exciting things coming up.

One of the uber-exciting things is the development of two intra-league teams in 2011. Basically, this means that NRDL will have a ‘season’ with two teams battling it out for top-dog in Newcastle. They’ll probably play monthly. We’ll still have a travel team that represents the elite of our league (the squad of which includes me…), which is called the Dockyard Dames but you’ll now be able to cheer for both teams… or choose your favourite and wear their colours.

What do you need to do?

As I said, the teams are currently in ‘development’ so there’s no uniforms, no team members and most importantly… no team names yet. We’re currently having a call-out within the league to come up with the best names. Wanna help me nominate some beauties? Chuck your ideas in the comments! There’s no limit to the number of entries you can submit and the entries don’t need to have any relation to Newcastle or skating or anything…. it’s open, though some examples of other league’s team names are:

  • Dolls Au‐Go‐Go
  • Dead Ringer Rosies
  • Toxic Avengers
  • Mile Die Club
  • Love Rockettes
  • Diner Might Dolls
  • Wild Hearses
  • Road Train Rollers

What do you win?

We’ll select a Top Five (cos dat’s my rollerderby number!) and post it as a poll for the public to choose their favourite. The favourite will win a $20 zine pack from Bird in the Hand. Get your entries in before the 20th July 2010. That’s next Tuesday.

You’ll also get bragging rights if your name ends up being chosen for an NRDL team… though, the poll on this blog’s favourite by no means suggests what NRDL will think. I’m just trying to get heaps of suggestions in!!!

GO! (oh… and spread the word…)
We stock roller derby’s official magazine too: fiveonfive and subscriptions too!

“Writing, initially a very private act, has the potential to become an overwhelmingly public act. I realize that this is part of the excitement of writing. I’ve experienced that excitement firsthand. But how a writer chooses to negotiate the transition between the privacy of writing and the publicness of reading will ultimately determine what kind of a writer he or she is. Writers who publish with small circulation magazines and tiny, non-commercial presses can sometimes achieve an astonishingly powerful presence, because they’ve acquired their readers gradually, incrementally, one by one. And the writer who begins with the big blastoff by the major New York publishing house can all too easily vanish. Nothing is for sure. The writer who holds back too much may well be a hopeless neurotic. But if there are risks involved in resisting the public, there are also dangers involved in running after the public. Nobody talks about those dangers anymore.”

Of course, the zine fair isn’t on until 3 October 2010 but there’s already quite a bit of interest coming through.

While you’re waiting for the TINA zine fair, get psyched on the Canberra Zine Fair. It’s on July 3. More details here: /canberra-zine-fair-july-3

Just got word of a few collaborative zine opportunities. Here’s the info they sent me:

1. NEW ZINE OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS: It will be an International Publication about appreciating life. The focus will be a bit different to the blog. For one thing, it will be a collaborative venture. But also, it will be less associated with consumerism and more focused on what is pretty right now.

Submissions should be as creative and as wide ranging as possible. Here are some examples though:
- Reflections on your favourite things.
- What you’re grateful for.
- Advice for appreciating what’s there.
- Reflections on maintaining happiness in what can be a really tough world.

We’re looking for photos, illustrations and words. Also, if you’d like, you can design your own pages and send them through.

At least in the initial stages, the zine will be black&white, so keep that in mind, especially with visual material. Successful contributers will not be paid in money, but will receive 2 free copies of the zine. TWO! One for you and a friend! Send all submissions to erin23456@hotmail.com The deadline for issue one will be the 9th of September, 2010.

2. Send your work for Femme a Barbe, the zine for bearded ladies and other gender outlaws.

Join the Femme a Barbe Insurgency.
