Bird in the Hand Zine Shop

zine also 'zine (zn) n. 1. An inexpensively produced, self-published, underground publication

Hello again…

It’s been a big week already huh?  Earlier in the week I sent off about 30 parcels to recipients right around the world and in noticing the popularity slowly growing in the Northern hemisphere I’ve adjusted our shipping rates to be real accurate.  Our shipping rates are organised by weight and are the prices we are charged by AusPost.

Where in the world are you, Carmen Santiago?

An example of shipping prices?  250g in Australia costs either $3.00 or $5.70 depending on shape of the parcel; 250g to NZ is $7.20; 250g to the UK is $11.35; and 250g to the US is $10.00.  This all sounds pretty affordable actually!  All items in our zine shop are weighed for accuracy and to make sure you’re paying just the right amount.

If you’re anywhere else in the world, we can accommodate your order.  You just have to ask me via email zineshop@gmail.com

Here’s some Australia-specific stuff we’ve been doing:

We’ve also seen how popular those Free Shipping Fridays are… so let me remind you!  Shipping is free within Australia every single Friday til Christmas.  This is just another way we show you we love ya guts.  Ho ho ho.

Yes, we know, you don’t want to think about Christmas.  So… Shipping is free automatically in Australia if you spend $40 or more.

Soon our shop on King Street will be back open.  I’ve had a bit of difficulty in that I work a bunch and play this hectic sport called roller derby.  At this time of the year, things start to get extremely busy but with the helping hand of trusty volunteers, we’ll be back in the game.  Email me if you’re interested in shop sitting zineshop@gmail.com

Do you wanna see what the shop looks like at the moment?

And what’s going on in other places?

I bet you’ve been thinking… What’s going on in the Japanese zine world?  Well, I just got linked to this article about expat zinemakers who’ve been bringing the zine art form to Japan of late.  Have a read!

This also led me to the website of a Japanese zine distro called Wasabi Distro.  What could be more interesting than this?

E Chris Lynch of Microcosm Publishing linked me today to a Kickstarter project of Microcosm’s to pay for publishing of their latest book “How and Why: a do it yourself guide”.  I’ve long been looking for an appropriate project to get funded through one of these sites (in Australia there’s one called FundBreak..).  Basically, Microcosm need $5,000 to pay for the printing of this book and they’re getting donations and ‘backing’ to do this.  They’re up to $4,940 and there’s 11 hours to go.  The tricky bit is, if you don’t get the full $5,000 pledged you get NOTHING.  All the money goes back to the original donaters.  It looks like Microcosm won’t have any trouble though.  I’ve pledged $25 and 81 other people have given something.  If you wanna be the cool cat to get them over the line, I highly suggest donating! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/897079804/print-matte-resists-new-book-how-and-why

And yes, there’s lots of new stuff in those pictures and lots of new stuff to go up on the website.  Lets just relax for a minute and then we’ll get back to it!
